The Continental Divide in the lower 48 states travels through the Rocky Mountains from Montana through New Mexico. It is the place that divides the rivers that run to the Pacific Ocean from those that run to the Atlantic Ocean. One great place to explore the Continental Divide is in the state of Colorado.

Rocky Mountain National Park is a beautiful place to see the Continental Divide in Colorado. This park has some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities in the United States.I found some more information here</ a>. The park has a large elk herd, and park officials estimate that there are over 800 bighorn sheep in the area. The elk are often seen in the Continental Divide area above treeline during the heat of the summer months.

One of the best ways to explore the Continental Divide in Rocky Mountain National Park is to hike the Continental Divide Scenic Trail. The entire trail is 3,100 miles long, but there is a scenic 30 mile section within the park boundaries. Park of the trail is at elevations of over 11,000 feet. This is a difficult trail to hike, but the effort will be rewarded with scenic views of mountain lakes, meadows and animals.

Visitors Colorado should definitely make a point to visit Longs Peak, Mount Evans and Pike’s Peak today! At 14,259 feet, Longs Peak towers among its peers in Rocky Mountain National Park. In the summer during ideal conditions, rock climbers head to Longs Peak’s Keyhole Route, a climb with steep cliffs, loose rock and narrow edges. For the less adventurous, there are several non-climbing hiking routes up Longs Peak along well maintained trails. For those wishing to spend the night, camping is available at the base of the mountain. Mount Evans features the highest paved road in North America, with heights reaching over 14,000 feet! The road is generally open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and begins from 8,700 feet in Idaho Springs. After the 14 mile road from the entrance station to the summit, visitors can hike the last 130 feet to the top. Pike’s Peak reaches 14,110 feet above sea level and is the world’s second most visited mountain behind Mt. Fuji in Japan. Although 15,000 people per year attempt to climb to Pike’s Peak summit, the Pike’s Peak Highway and famous Pike’s Peak Cog Railway are much easier alternatives!

One misconception about driving into Colorado from the flat Smoky Hills of Kansas is that you will leave the flat lands behind and embark on a magical, mountain adventure. This may be true after a few miles, but there is very little change from the Kansas line until you get well into the high plains of Colorado.

It can be beneficial to forgo the Interstate highway and veer off onto one of the many State highways that crisscross the countryside. This is enjoying the country as many did in the recent past. Slowing down and admiring the multitude of pronghorn deer along the way and the rolling hills of sage and cactus is the best way to enjoy and remember the trip. Wide open ranches, cattle dotting the hillsides, horses running for the sheer exuberance of it are all sights you will not see speeding along at 75 miles per hour.

As you come to the city of Limon, you will begin to notice that the low-lying clouds you see off to the west begin to take on the definition of snow-covered peaks and dark green valleys of the Rocky Mountain Range. One can’t help but imagine the fortitude of the early settlers as they gazed upon this most impressive barrier to their journey west.

Cactus, prairie dogs, antelope, and rolling hills are what make up the high plains of eastern Colorado. A beautiful and barren country that appears imposing as the sun sets over the craggy Rockies.

Did you know that Colorado is home to the highest continuous road in the USA? It is located in north central Colorado as part of Rocky Mountain National Park. Trail Ridge Road soars to 12,183 feet and is usually only open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, weather permitting. Some years the snowpack is so deep that the opening has to be delayed or the fall snows come before Labor Day and it is closed early for safety.

In addition to the highest continuous road, Colorado also has the highest road which goes to the visitor center on Mount Evans. This road climbs to a breathtaking 14,240 feet where the views are spectacular. The bristle cone pine living there are some of the oldest trees in the world.

Colorado’s lowest point is higher than the highest point in 18 other states. The lowest point is 3,315 feet above sea level at the Arikaree River in Yuma County located near the Colorado, adt by city, Nebraska and Kansas border.

The quaking aspen trees create beautiful color on the mountain sides. These trees grow as part of a floating island of trees and have been known to shift their location slowly. This island method of growing helps protect them from high winds as their roots are shallow. In this case there is safety in numbers.

Colorado is a state that knows the value of layers of clothing year-around. Always have a warm jacket in the car when traveling, especially in the mountains. It can snow in the high country any month of the year.
